Are you tired of reading about how this time should be SOOOOO productive for entrepreneurs? From every source you are being bombarded with 100 things to do during the shutdown? “Clean your closets,” “organize your supplies,” “finish your taxes,” “plant a garden,” “create a filing system for your office,” “renovate your home,” “sew masks,” “learn how to cook/bake,” DIY this, DIY that. It’s infuriating! It’s almost like the universe believes we, us entrepreneurs, have been sitting on our butts doing nothing until this happened. That’s not true…at least not for me, probably not for you.

There is a lot of fear and uncertainty in the world today. The COVID-19 virus and the toll it is taking on families, jobs, global economies, communication and recreation is broadcast on nearly every media outlet, if you care to listen. My heart goes out to everyone directly or indirectly affected by what’s happening. While we really have no experience in dealing with what we are facing now, we know other historical events triggered these same emotions of fear, helplessness and hysteria.

In times of chaos, it’s easy to become emotionally caught up in our outside circumstances. But even though we have no control of the world around us, we can control our responses to what is happening. We can adapt and we can pivot and we can shift to new things, or maybe we can just be thoughtful, and enjoy some downtime.

Decision-making is hard right now, since the future is so unknown. So I encourage you to be aware of the outer forces shouting at you to be constantly productive, and do what makes you feel good, feel accomplished, feel successful.

Let’s avoid being pulled in too many directions. Let’s avoid over-analyzing to the point of paralysis, or the negative emotions of overwhelm, that come from desires to “be productive.”

Six Tips to Avoid the Overwhelm

  1. Narrow your field of vision. Instead of desperately grasping at every person who promises to help you grow your business during this time, just focus on one or two who resonate with you. Tune out everyone else.
  2. Narrow your focus to just one thing. Maybe it is the home-schooling challenge, or maybe it is staying in touch with distant friends and family. Maybe it is cleaning up a closet or two, or organizing your desk. But pick one thing and concentrate on that..especially if you feel pulled in a hundred directions. Now is not the time to become the SuperPerson you envy…there is too much uncertainty causing your normal ground to be unstable.
  3. Reduce the number of choices you have. If you feel like you are being bombarded with dozens of projects that need to be completed, just pick one for today…and work on that. Narrowing your projects to one or 2 will help to keep you focused and on task, and will also make it more likely you will complete it, feeling that glorious self-satisfaction as you cross the task off your list once and for all!
  4. In your business, look only as far as the next thing that needs to be done. Is is it a website, then secure your domain name. Is it a blog post…just pick a photo and write a paragraph. Is it communicating with someone you want to work with? Then invite them to connect on LinkedIn or Facebook, or send them a personal email. Don’t feel guilty that you only have one focus for today. Concentrate on being who you are, and doing what you do best. Marketing is like a brand new exercise program, and sometimes just going for a walk and doing 3-5 sit-ups is enough.
  5. When you decide what the next thing is…break it down into baby steps and see what needs to be done first. Just do that ONE THING, and leave the rest for tomorrow. You will find that small goal completion will make you feel accomplished as you are incrementally moving in the right direction.
  6. Don’t forget to take some time to smell the roses. Get outdoors, maintain social distance, breathe in fresh air, and just let your mind wander. We don’t need to be productive 24/7. We can just BE!
